LATE INTELLIGENCE — TECHNOLOGY
Local engineer Joaquín Godoy observed wiring machines to speak plainly. Witnesses report entire systems “explaining themselves” without supervision. The engineer insists the feat owes much to a peculiar contrivance he calls “Artificial Intelligence” — whatever that may be.

Mr. Godoy makes no secret of his enthusiasm. The thinking machine, he declares, is the greatest alteration to his trade in a generation, and he will say so at length to anyone who calls. Your correspondent, who had come prepared for the usual denials, found him instead at a side bench of the workshop, sleeves up, arguing with the apparatus.
He grants its faults readily. It will produce a hundred pages before breakfast and answer for none of them; it has no name upon the work and no cause ever to return. He does not appear to regard this as reason to set it aside — only as reason to remain in the room. Responsibility, he holds, has not yet been mechanised, and until it is, the engineer’s signature is the only one on the drawing. The rest is a matter of what the contrivance is fed. His preference runs to machinery that will stand upright: readable in the morning, honest under load, and unbowed by the fashions of the season. A machine of good posture, he observes, the new apparatus may be trusted with. A machine of poor posture it will simply build wrong, and faster.
Beauty, he maintains, is of little use unless the machinery continues to behave when no one is watching.
Callers describe ledgers reconciling themselves, queries confessing their cost before execution, and entire systems reporting their ailments in plain language. The result is machinery built not merely to function, but to endure inspection, alteration, and the occasional indignity of being inherited by another man.

An interactive essay on cellular automata: six simulations running live on your own graphics card, from Conway’s Game of Life to a 33-kilobyte network that grows a butterfly and repairs it.

Every simulation in this essay runs on one idea: each cell on the grid looks only at its immediate neighbours, applies a single rule, and knows nothing about the picture it belongs to. Nobody tells the grid what to draw. The structure that appears — gliders, spots, stripes, whole organisms — is what falls out of that rule, applied everywhere at once.
There are six of them, ordered by how alive they get: Conway’s Game of Life, the wider rule space around it, Larger than Life, Lenia, reaction–diffusion, and finally a neural cellular automaton. All six are computed on your own GPU through WebGPU compute shaders — nothing here is a recorded video. On an Apple M-series chip under Metal 3, Conway sustains 5.8 billion cell updates per second on a 2048×2048 grid. Lenia’s much larger neighbourhood is convolved with an FFT instead, which overtakes direct convolution past a radius of about nine and runs 2.4× faster at Lenia’s radius of thirteen.
The last one was never programmed. It is a network of 8,336 numbers — 33 kilobytes, smaller than a screenshot of its own output — trained offline in PyTorch until a single lit pixel reliably grows into a butterfly. Drag the cursor through it and it does not restore a saved copy, because it doesn’t have one. Each surviving cell renegotiates with its neighbours, and the wing closes over the wound.
Every figure quoted above was measured on real hardware rather than estimated, and where the project’s own tables have no measurement they print a dash instead of a guess — a policy this newspaper warmly recommends to its competitors. — ED.
